Soccer Manager believes that most of the answers to your questions are covered within our Help.

Short term money:

sell your players that you don't need.
sell the players that may retire soon.

Long Term money:

invest in the youth players (under 21 or 18). Imagine if i bought Messi years ago when he was work 3 million on SM at age of 16 Check the news for the upcoming youth players e.g. from the Barcelona academy.
Loan them out.
Wait until you get money.
Then you can use him to win trophies or sell to get money.
