Soccer Manager believes that most of the answers to your questions are covered within our Help.

In the SMFA cup, there are 32 teams, split into 8 divisions, with 4 teams in each division. The teams will battle it out like a normal league, until they reach to the knockout stage. In the knockout stage you play the same team, twice. If you lose, you are 'kicked' from the tournament. If you win, you progress into the next round.

The shield is exactly the same.

Im not sure what you need to qualify though. I think they select the best 8 from each league? Something like that.
