why havent i been promted when i am 2 points infront of 4th and they have been promoted

i played in playoffs and lost 1-0 but in the table i was 2 points infront of the other team anyway so wjhy did i have to play playoffs and why havent i been promoted

it shows who qualifies and who does play offs with lines as well, eg
arsenal
inter
---------
liverpool
barcelona
real madrid
fc porto

Each season 3 teams are promoted, two are automaticly promoted another must go through the play-offs, positions 3-6 get into the play-off it is a knock out competition, the winner is promoted.
