I bid £50k (the max) for a £10k, 70-ranked player at an unmanaged club. In spite of being the first bidder and bidding the max allowed - a subsequent bidder who offered the same £50k was successful in getting the player. How does that work?
Possibly because the player would have a more important role at the other club?
I.e. if you have stronger players in the player's position then your opponent.
If that is not the case, send a bug ticket.
