How does a player's position relates to his stats in a match?

Additional Details
The statistics shown after every match for a given player is according to how he played, right? Then how come no matter the number of goals scored or assists made, my player in position 8 always have a rating of 5 or below? Is this a bug?
Answers
Playing a player in his correct position does not guarantee that he will play well since there are other factors like the opponent's players, formations, and tactics.
