Is this a defensive tactic or does it apply when your team doesnt have the ball. You need to be more specific. Arsenal had 10 men behind the ball when they were not in possesion but still played a very attacking game winning 3-0 against Chelsea & it wasnt all counter attacking football.
Also, i like to play Messi on the wing. Ideally i want him to cut inside & attack the goal but there is no option for that.

Men Behind the Ball is a tactical defensive option were your players will try to get as many men behind the ball as possible.
If you want your team to be very attacking with this you can set the mentality to V Attacking also. If you want to counter attack you can tick the box for this under the Play Style options.
If you want Messi to cut in you can set a run for him to come inside. On the pre-match instructions screen click on Messi and you can then click one of the circles that appear to set which way he should run.

It applies when you dont have the ball to get the ball back at soon as possible and win possetion after losing ball. you should play messi in a 3-4-1-2 with him being deep lying forward which is the one and this works great in barca and real madrid. if that does not work use a 4-3-3 formation with him as the center forward.
