The SMFA Shield is in a knockout format involving the qualified clubs from each Game World, with pairings drawn completely at random as there are no seeds.
Each knockout stage is played over two legs, home and away (away goals count double), with the club with the highest score proceeding to the next round.
If the aggregate score is level then away goals will count double. If the aggregate scores are still level then penalties are used to decide who will progress to the next stage of the tournament.
The SMFA Cup final is a one off match played at a neutral pre-determined venue. If the match is a draw after 90 minutes have been played, then penalties are used to decide who will lift the trophy.
Any player who makes an appearance for a club at any stage of the SMFA Shield is cup-tied for all future matches during that season in the same competition.
This means that if the player transfers clubs during the same season he will not be eligible to represent his new club in that competition for the duration of the season.
For example a player represents club "x" in the SMFA Shield and then transfers to club "y". The player in question will be cup-tied in relation to the SMFA Shield for the duration of the tournament.
Any player who makes an appearance for a club at any stage of the SMFA Shield will not become cup-tied for future matches within Standard Game Worlds.
Any player who makes an appearance for a club at any stage of the SMFA Cup will not become cup-tied for future matches within Custom Game Worlds.
The winners of the SMFA Shield qualify for the following seasons Super Cup.
In both Gold Championships and Standard Game Worlds the SMFA pays each club prize money for qualifying for each round of the competition and the overall winners receive bonus prize money.
